007 First Light's 20-Hour Runtime Reignites the Cost-vs-Length Debate

007 First Light, released May 27 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X has reportedly reignited one of gaming's recurring arguments: whether a roughly 20-hour AAA campaign justifies a full sticker price. IO Interactive's first James Bond game in 14 years appears to be reviewing and selling well, yet social posts suggest the runtime remains a flashpoint weeks after launch.

Debate around length reportedly started before release, after IO Interactive indicated how long the campaign would take to beat. YouTuber Deez Games drew millions of views with a post that framed the tension plainly:

I love a shorter game, but not when I've paid #65+ [sic] for it. 007 First Light looks fun, but I'll definitely wait for a sale now,

On the game's subreddit this week, one user posted that 007 First Light

Was fun but not $70 fun.

Supporters of the runtime argue that 20 hours is a normal benchmark for lavish cinematic action games, not a short outlier. Tracking data cited for comparable titles puts several recent hits in the same ballpark:

  • God of War (2018): about 20.5 hours for the main story
  • The Last of Us Part 2: around 24 hours
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order: about 22 hours for the main story and some side content
  • Uncharted 4: 18 hours
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider: 23 hours

007 First Light reportedly applies IO Interactive's Hitman-style puzzle-box design to Bond espionage, with pacing built around tutorials, stealth, shootouts, chases, and Q-branch gadgets. Fans weighing value against runtime may still wonder whether more AAA studios will follow that tighter model.
