Formula 1 marked the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a fan vote on the paddock's dream football starting eleven, gathering selections through the Formula 1 app as 48 nations compete across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
After Barcelona's footballing paddock stop, the grid's kickabout mood carried into the poll. Voters backed a 4-2-3-1 layout mixing defensive discipline with technical midfield play and goal scoring up front. Here are the starters named in the results:
- Goalkeeper: George Russell (Mercedes), the clear winner for the position
- Full-backs: Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, the 2007 teammates
- Centre-backs: Nico Hulkenberg and Max Verstappen
- Midfield pivot: Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris
- Attacking midfield (#10): Kimi Antonelli
- Front three: Carlos Sainz, Oscar Piastri, and Pierre Gasly (starting striker)
Russell's height and speed were highlighted for shot stopping, with Alonso and Hamilton chosen for experience and positioning at full back. Hulkenberg and Verstappen were paired for chemistry as well as tackling, while Leclerc and Norris were selected for technical midfield work rate. Antonelli, 19, fills the creative ten role after youth football experience. Sainz, widely regarded among the paddock's strongest footballers was placed in the front three trusted to supply goals alongside Oscar Piastri and starting striker Pierre Gasly, with Sainz likely drifting inside in attack.
