  1. Lionel Messi (Argentina) Messi takes the top spot because he once again proved that age is just a number. The Argentina captain controlled the tempo of the game, created chances, and delivered decisive moments when his team needed him most. He clearly outshone the others with his first World Cup hat-trick.
  2. Kylian Mbappé (France) Mbappé was the player that France were looking for to take them deep into the tournament. He was fast, mobile, and finished the ball with ease, leaving defenders in his wake. He was one of the favourites for the Golden Boot, and few players looked more dangerous when they touched the ball.
  3. Harry Kane (England) England's captain played a full-blooded center-forward. Kane wasn't just in front of goal, he was also on the floor to break up the play and find space for his teammates. His leadership, brace and composure played a major role in England's first win.
  4. Erling Haaland (Norway) Haaland lived up to the hype surrounding his return to the World Cup for Norway. The Manchester City striker was physically intimidating defenders and was efficient at scoring goals from opportunities. His performance proved that he is still one of the most dreaded forwards in soccer.
  5. Folarin Balogun (United States) Balogun was arguably the biggest breakout star of Matchday 1. The U.S. forward was confident, intelligent, and clinical. His performance provided the Americans with a target in attack and showed his increasing value to the national team.
  6. Vozinha (Cape Verde) Vozinha is the only goalkeeper in the top 10, and he got his spot by a heroic effort between the posts. His string of saves proved to be the difference in the game against Spain for Cape Verde and showed how one player can make all the difference in the game.
  7. Lee Kang-in (South Korea) Lee was the creative force for South Korea all day. His vision, technical ability, and composure on the ball helped to break down defenses and create scoring opportunities. Few midfielders had a greater impact on their team's attacking play.
  8. Díaz (Colombia) Díaz was a source of excitement when he got the ball. He was the most dangerous attacking threat in Colombia because of his direct running, dribbling, and ability to beat defenders. He always played opponents on the defensive.
  9. Kai Havertz (Germany) Havertz had one of his best games in a Germany jersey. He was able to seamlessly connect midfield and attack, found dangerous spaces, and played a major role in Germany's 7-1 success. He was a smart and versatile player throughout the game.
  10. Jude Bellingham (England) Bellingham rounds out the rankings after another mature display in midfield. The Real Madrid star dominated possession, crucial duels, and helped to set England's tempo. He didn't make the news like some of the others, but his effect was felt in all aspects.

Others like Vinícius Júnior, Lautaro Martínez, Michael Olise, and Joao Neves were also superb in the first round and are in a position to move up the rankings after the second round of games.

After Matchday 1, Lionel Messi sits atop the 2026 FIFA World Cup power rankings, followed by Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, and the rest of the top 10.
