Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri scored from corners to turn the match around, with Gouiri reacting first to a second ball for the winner. It was Algeria's first World Cup win in 12 years. Jordan, resilient after a 3-1 opening loss to Austria were denied a first tournament point despite briefly holding a route to topping the group with a final-round win over Argentina still technically alive before the Algerian equalizer.
Algeria dominated statistically with 1.8 expected goals to Jordan's 0.7, 17 shots to eight, and 71 percent possession. Riyad Mahrez led Algeria's attack while Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila helped keep the score close until the late turnaround.
