Ronaldo is competing in his sixth World Cup. He has already established himself as a legend on the international stage, holding the all time records for men's national team appearances with 226 and goals with 143.
He is also one of the most decorated players in World Cup history. Ronaldo is the only player to have scored in five different World Cups, and he is looking to extend that record to six this year.
World Cup Title Still Elusive
The only major piece missing from Ronaldo's career is a World Cup title, and he will look to change that this year.
At 41 years old, basic logic would lead most to conclude that this will be Ronaldo's last World Cup. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said last month that he is not counting out the star for 2030.
Martinez on Ronaldo's Mentality and Longevity
Martinez addressed what separates Ronaldo from other elite players who have reached the top of the sport.
I have worked with many players that have a Champions League or a Ballon d'Or and the next day they lose their appetite. What we have with Ronaldo is an example of a different mentality.
Martinez pointed to Ronaldo's drive, preparation, and mindset as factors behind his continued presence at the highest level.
I believe that having that goal is what allows for longevity. Of course, there is a genetic aspect, the work he puts in, he uses everything that can help his body, and his mentality.
Portugal's Opening Match
Ronaldo and Portugal will begin World Cup action on Wednesday against Congo DR.
