The spot kick followed a coming together between Qatar goalkeeper Abunada and Switzerland's Remo Freuler, who had been played in behind one on one. Abunada took a heavy blow to the head in a collision with Freuler before play continued and the penalty decision was upheld. Embolo side footed the ball into the corner and sent Abunada the wrong way.
Switzerland controlled much of the opening half. Dan Ndoye missed two presentable chances inside the first 10 minutes, and the Swiss continued to create openings while Qatar chased the game. Play resumed after a hydration break with the score still 0-1, and conditions were difficult with a National Weather Service Heat Advisory issued ahead of kickoff.
Group B also includes co host Canada, who opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Qatar conceded their first goal of this tournament at 16:39, four years after allowing an opener in the 16th minute of their 2022 inaugural match as hosts.
