Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute on a rebound after Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada punched away David's volley. David doubled the lead with a right footed volley in the 29th minute, his first goal in the run of play in more than a year. Homan Ahmed was sent off for Qatar in the 33rd minute after video review upgraded an initial yellow for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan. David made it 3-0 in first half stoppage time during a scramble off the crossbar.
Early in the second half, Assim Madibo was shown a red card for a tackle on Ismaël Koné, who was stretched off with a serious injury to his lower left leg. Substitute Nathan Saliba scored on a free kick in the 64th minute, and Mohamed Manai turned a shot into his own net in the 75th. David completed his hat trick in stoppage time, joining Argentina's Lionel Messi as the only players with three goals in a single match at this World Cup.
Qatar finished with nine players. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was among 52,497 fans in attendance and sat with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Canada captain Alphonso Davies and Moïse Bombito were available after missing or sitting out the opener but neither saw action. Switzerland defeated Bosnia Herzegovina 4-1 earlier in the day in Group B.
