Mbappé entered Tuesday's match tied with Pelé on 12 career World Cup goals. He moved past the Brazil great in the 66th minute with the first goal of the game, a strike that also pulled him level with fellow Frenchman Just Fontaine and Lionel Messi on the tournament's all-time list.

Senegal cut France's lead to 2-1 in stoppage time, but Mbappé answered moments later with a long-range shot past goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. That goal restored France's two-goal cushion, pushed him ahead of Fontaine and Messi on the World Cup chart, and gave him his 58th international goal, breaking his deadlock with Olivier Giroud as France's all-time top scorer.

World Cup Scoring Standings

Mbappé's 14th career World Cup goal ties him with Germany's Gerd Müller for third place on the men's all-time list. Only two players sit above them.

  1. Miroslav Klose (Germany) - 16 goals, the all-time men's leader
  2. Ronaldo Nazário (Brazil) - 15 goals
  3. Gerd Müller (Germany) and Kylian Mbappé (France) - 14 goals each

Mbappé reached 14 World Cup goals in just 15 tournament matches. Lionel Messi has 13 goals across 26 World Cup games. Klose scored his 16 goals in 24 matches spread over four World Cups.

Fontaine remains one of the most prolific single-tournament scorers in World Cup history. All 13 of his goals came across six games in one World Cup, a rate Mbappé would need to match to surpass on that front.

France's Path Forward

Mbappé is not only pushing toward the World Cup scoring record but also chasing team success on the biggest stage. France is aiming for a third straight World Cup final, and Mbappé is in the hunt for a second Golden Boot as the tournament's top goal scorer.

He the Golden Boot at Qatar 2022, finishing with eight goals to Lionel Messi's seven.
