Messi missed a penalty in the ninth minute before opening the scoring in the 38th minute at a sold out crowd of 70,649 at the Dallas Cowboys home stadium. He added his 18th goal in stoppage time, extending a run of scoring in six consecutive World Cup matches. Argentina has its first two Group J games and advanced to the knockout round after Messi also scored all three goals in a 3-0 win over Algeria in Kansas City.

Later Monday, Kylian Mbappe matched Klose's mark of 16 with two goals in France's 3-0 win over Iraq.
