The strike came in Messi's 200th game for the Albiceleste and his 27th World Cup appearance, extending his record for most World Cup matches played. It was his 14th World Cup goal and reportedly came with help from Lucas Zidane, son of the French and Real Madrid icon.
Earlier in the match, goals from Messi and Algeria's Chaibi were disallowed for narrow offside calls before Messi broke through from distance.
With the goal, Messi matched Rivellino with five goals from outside the box in World Cup history. He also reached 22 goal contributions in the tournament, 14 goals and eight assists, surpassing Pelé's 21 for the most goals plus assists in World Cup history.
On the all-time World Cup scoring chart, Messi is level with Kylian Mbappé on 14 goals and sits behind only Ronaldo Nazário on 15 and Miroslav Klose on 16.
Messi also matched Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to score in five different World Cup editions. Ronaldo found the net in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022, while Messi scored in 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026.
