Paraguay forward Miguel Almiron was sent off in the first half after video review determined he said something to Turkey's Mert Muldur while covering his mouth. It marked the first red card ever issued at a World Cup for that act, under a rule passed by the International Football Assn. Board in April meant to prevent players from concealing abusive or discriminatory language.
Turkey controlled much of the possession and pushed late, but could not find an equalizer. A header from Merih Demiral went wide in the penultimate minute, and Hakan Calhanoglu's shot missed on the final play. In the 89th minute, Can Uzun's point blank effort was stopped by Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, and Daniz Gul missed a wide open chance on the deflection.
With the win, the United States clinched the top spot in Group D. Turkey, held scoreless across two matches was eliminated from knockout stage contention and joined Haiti as the only teams eliminated from the tournament so far.
Galarza was taken off on a stretcher in stoppage time after sustaining an apparent leg injury.
