The 19-year-old defender is set for his first World Cup with Spain, which opens its campaign on June 18 against Cape Verde. Ahead of the tournament, Cubarsí took part in a quick Q&A and was asked which player he would like to exchange jerseys with.
He gave the same answer when asked for the first player who comes to mind when talking about World Cups. When the question turned to which opponent he would like to face in a hypothetical World Cup final, he chose Argentina, the current world champion, without hesitation.
Cubarsí said that if given the chance to exchange jerseys, he would do so with one of the Argentine stars. A Spain vs Argentina final remains far off on the calendar, but both sides are positioned among the contenders in North America. Spain is built around a crop of young talents including Lamine Yamal and Cubarsí himself, while Argentina is looking to defend the crown it at Qatar 2022 in what will be captain Messi's sixth and final World Cup.
Spain and Argentina paths
Luis de la Fuente's Spain squad is in Group H. After the June 18 opener against Cape Verde, La Roja face Saudi Arabia on June 23 and close the group stage against Uruguay on June 27.
Lionel Scaloni's Argentina are in Group J. The Albiceleste debut against Algeria on Tuesday, June 16, at Kansas City Stadium, then play Austria on June 22 and Jordan on June 27, both at Dallas Stadium.
If both teams finish first in their respective groups and advance all the way to the final, Cubarsí could hit a double target: playing in a World Cup final and taking home an unforgettable memory of Messi. For now, the young defender said he remains focused on continuing to grow within a national team that aspires to return to the pinnacle of world soccer after its first and only title, at South Africa 2010.
