Portugal's opening group stage match initially looked like it was going their way. Joao Neves put them ahead in the sixth minute. Congo DR, making its first World Cup appearance in 52 years, pulled level when forward Yoane Wissa equalized with a header in first half stoppage time. Portugal created several chances in the second half but could not break the deadlock and settled for the draw.
Uzbekistan opened with a 3 to 1 defeat to Colombia. Abbosbek Fayzullaev briefly leveled the match by scoring early in the second half, answering Daniel Munoz's first half goal for Colombia. Colombia's attack proved too much for Uzbekistan, which conceded additional goals to Luis Diaz and Jaminton Campaz.
For Portugal, only a victory against Uzbekistan will ensure their fate remains in their own hands as they pursue the top spot in Group K.
