The USMNT is back in World Cup action this afternoon against Australia in Group D at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The team opened its tournament last Friday with a 4-1 win against Paraguay. That was a strong showing, but an injury concern from the opener still lingers. Christian Pulisic exited the match against Paraguay early and is doubtful to play today due to a calf injury sustained in the opening match.

Australia matchup and recent form

Australia is a familiar opponent for the USMNT. Back in October, the United States beat the Socceroos 2-1 in a friendly. Australia comes into this afternoon's match off a 2-0 victory in its opening match against Türkiye.

With three points each after decisively winning their opening matches, the USMNT and Australia sit tied atop the Group D leaderboard.

Group D clinching scenarios

If the USMNT wins and Paraguay wins or ties against Türkiye later tonight, the United States could clinch the top spot in the group and punch its ticket to the Round of 32.

However, a win for Australia paired with a Türkiye win or tie would put the Socceroos in the top spot.
