Canada and Qatar met in FIFA World Cup Group B, with Canada taking control through Cyle Larin and a Jonathan David double before the match turned on a serious-looking injury to Ismael Kone and a red card for Qatar's Assim Omer Madibo.
Cyle Larin put Canada ahead early in the flow of the game before Jonathan David added two goals. Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina are also in Group B alongside the two sides.
Canada's Ismael Kone was caught by Assim Omer Madibo in midfield in what was initially shown as a yellow-card challenge. Madibo had his head in his hands after the incident, and Kone was later stretchered off sitting up. Nathan Saliba came on to replace him, and play resumed in a deflated atmosphere at the ground.
Former England striker Dion Dublin said:
It's a horrible situation to be in. Kone has just been lifted off on a stretcher. We haven't seen a replay and I'm not sure I want to. He was putting his thumbs up to his fans, he is conscious, he's saying thanks for the support to them.
Assim Omer Madibo's yellow card was upgraded to a red, leaving Qatar down to nine men for the remainder of the match. At the break, Qatar brought on Ahmed Fathy and Mohammad Al Manai for Edmílson Junior and Jassem Gaber, while Canada introduced Moise Bombito for Derek Cornelius, who had been on a yellow.
With Qatar already holding a point in the group, a win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in their final World Cup match would likely take them through. Canada, meanwhile, could reach four points in the standings and may be through with a match to spare depending on how the rest of Group B plays out.
