GTA 6 Pre Orders Open June 25 as Rockstar Locks November 19 Release Date

Details on the project remain limited in several areas, including final pricing and additional platform support. Even so, the combination of a firm November launch window and an imminent pre order date makes the timeline look increasingly locked in after two prior delays.

Release Date and Previous Delays

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on 19 November. With Rockstar recently opening the door to pre orders, that date appears all but certain for the current plan.

The game was delayed twice before reaching this window. It was originally targeted for autumn 2025, then pushed to May 2026, before landing on the November 19 date now in place.

When the second delay was announced, Rockstar said it needed extra months to finish the game with the level of polish fans had come to expect and deserve.

Price, Platforms, and What Is Still Unknown

The sixth mainline entry in the series will release first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. There is no news yet on when a PC version will arrive, and it is currently unknown whether GTA 6 will come to Nintendo Switch 2.

Rockstar and its parent company Take Two have still not revealed the game's price. That figure will likely only be confirmed once pre sales begin in late June.

Some analysts have estimated GTA 6 could become the first major release priced at $100, or £76 in the UK. Analysts also believe the project could become the most expensive game ever made, with development cost estimates putting spending at more than $1bn, or £866m.

Story, Setting, and Main Characters

GTA 6 will feature its first playable female protagonist in a 3D setting, Lucia, alongside her partner in life and crime, Jason, as a second playable character.

From what has been shown so far across two gameplay trailers, the story follows the pair in a Bonnie and Clyde style adventure through the seedy underbelly of America after an easy score goes wrong.

Like earlier entries in the franchise, the sixth chapter is set in a fictional US state. This time that state is Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida.

Vice City, inspired by Miami, returns as the main city within Leonida. Rockstar revealed GTA 6 cover art on 18 June, and the image made several nods to the setting with alligators and flamingos.

Where to Pre Order

Rockstar has said GTA 6 will be available to pre order on Thursday, 25 June, through digital stores and other retailers.

Because the game is coming first to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, it can already be added to wishlists on the PlayStation and Xbox digital storefronts ahead of the pre order window.

How Long Rockstar Has Been Working on GTA 6

GTA 6 has been in development across several years. The franchise's last main installment, GTA 5, launched in September 2013 and quickly became one of the best selling games of all time.

It is unclear whether Rockstar has been working on the sixth entry for the entire span since GTA 5's release. In 2018, the studio also shipped another major sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar confirmed for the first time that it was working on a sixth game in the series in February 2022. Rising development costs and the immense pressure to live up to the series' hype are among the factors tied to the long wait for release.

Several months after that confirmation, footage and images leaked after teenage hackers targeted the company.

The project has also faced other issues since then, including accusations of union busting tied to sacked workers at Rockstar North, the Edinburgh headquarters where developers have been racing to get GTA 6 ready for release in November.

Why the Hype Is So Large

The Grand Theft Auto franchise ranks among the biggest and most profitable entertainment properties in history.

GTA 5 has sold nearly 230 million copies, cementing the series' commercial footprint heading into the next launch.
