Crucial details remain outstanding, including the game's price. Rockstar and parent company Take-Two have not announced what GTA 6 will cost, and that figure may only surface once pre-sales begin in late June.

Release Date and Delays

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19. With Rockstar opening pre-orders, that date appears all but locked in after two previous delays from autumn 2025 and May 2026.

When the second delay was announced, Rockstar said it needed extra months to finish the game with the level of polish fans had come to expect.

Price, Platforms, and Analyst Estimates

The sixth mainline entry will launch first on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. There is no confirmed timeline for a PC version, and it is currently unknown whether GTA 6 will come to Nintendo Switch 2.

With recent blockbuster games launching at higher price points than in past generations, some analysts have estimated GTA 6 could become the first major title priced at $100, or roughly £76. That remains speculation until Rockstar and Take-Two set an official figure.

Story, Setting, and Characters

GTA 6 will feature its first playable female protagonist in a 3D setting, Lucia, alongside her partner in life and crime, Jason, as a second playable character. Based on two gameplay trailers released so far, the story follows the pair on a Bonnie and Clyde-style run through the seedy underbelly of America after an easy score goes wrong.

Like earlier entries, the game is set in a fictional U.S. state. This time that state is Leonida, Rockstar's take on Florida. Vice City, inspired by Miami, returns as the main city within Leonida. Rockstar unveiled GTA 6 cover art on June 18, with visual nods to the setting through alligators and flamingos.

Pre-Orders and Wishlists

Because GTA 6 is coming first to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, players can add it to wishlists on the PlayStation and Xbox digital storefronts before pre-orders go live on June 25.

Development Timeline

GTA 6 has been in development for years. The franchise's last main installment, GTA 5, shipped in September 2013 and quickly became one of the best-selling games of all time. It is unclear whether Rockstar worked on the sixth game continuously across that entire span, since the studio also released Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018.

Rockstar confirmed for the first time that it was actively developing a sixth Grand Theft Auto game in February 2022. Rising development costs and the pressure to meet the series' expectations are among the factors cited for the long wait leading into the November launch.

Several months after that confirmation, footage and images from the project leaked after teenage hackers targeted the company. Development has faced additional scrutiny since then, including accusations of union-busting tied to sacked workers at Rockstar North, the Edinburgh headquarters where teams have been pushing to get GTA 6 ready for its November release window.

Why the Hype Is This Big

The Grand Theft Auto franchise ranks among the biggest and most profitable entertainment properties in history. GTA 5 alone has sold nearly 230 million copies, cementing its place as one of the best-selling games ever made and setting a massive commercial bar for whatever Rockstar delivers in November.
