The change arrives years after Rockstar first released Expanded and Enhanced versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022, an update that often required a separate purchase for existing last gen owners. A similar Enhanced upgrade for PC was delivered as a free update in March 2025.
Grand Theft Auto V originally launched on September 17, 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, later reaching PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in late 2014 and PC in 2015. Rockstar states the current gen versions bring high fidelity visuals and graphical options tailored to player preferences, though performance in dense GTA Online sessions can still fluctuate on the aging engine.
With more than 210 million copies sold as of 2025, GTA V remains one of the largest active online communities in gaming. The free upgrade lands just months before Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, and could signal Rockstar pushing its player base onto current hardware ahead of that release and future GTA Online content, including the upcoming The Kortz Center Heist in July.
Players who skipped the paid 2022 upgrade get a clear win, while early adopters who already bought the Expanded and Enhanced editions may view the belated free offer as a retrospective hit to the value of that purchase.
