Bosnia supporters made up the vocal majority in a full house for the match on FIFA World Cup Day 8. Barbarez had his team on equal footing until Switzerland, ranked 19th in the world, scored the opening goal in the 74th minute. Bosnia entered ranked 64th.

Barbarez on the performance

Speaking through an interpreter after the loss, Barbarez pointed to a stronger stretch once play settled.

Maybe our start wasn't that good. But from the first cooling break until the goal, we were the better players, the better team.

He said he refused to dwell on the defeat in the dressing room.

I don't like self pity. I entered the dressing room and told them all that they have one hour to cheer up to lift their heads up.

The defeat snapped a run of six consecutive 1-1 or 0-0 draws for Bosnia, including a 1-1 World Cup opener against host Canada. It was the team's first loss in six matches under Barbarez.

Bosnia must win its next match on Wednesday against Qatar for any chance to reach the knockout stage of the 48 team, 39 day tournament. Barbarez said that finale always looked like the decisive fixture.

It seemed from the very beginning that the last game would be the most important one, and it turns out it is.

He pledged his squad would be ready.

It's hurtful; it's quite painful. But this is my job, and trust me, I'll make sure they will be fine ahead of the next game. We will try to remedy what happened.

From Bundesliga scorer to poker tables to the touchline

Barbarez spent most of his 14 year professional playing career in the Bundesliga, scoring 105 goals for Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg, and Bayer Leverkusen. When he retired, he earned his coaching license but did not use it until 2024, choosing instead to gamble on a different competitive calling.

He played poker professionally in Europe for a decade, made at least $143,000, and reached two final tables in the World Series of Poker. He also became an unabashed critic of the Football Assn. of Bosnia as the federation churned through managers, with three hired and fired within months. Beyond failing to qualify for the 2024 Euros, Barbarez admonished the Football Assn. of Bosnia.

Barbarez is coaching at any competitive level for the first time on one of the sport's biggest stages. The parallel drawn in coverage compares him to JJ Redick, the Lakers coach who moved from broadcasting into a high profile NBA job without prior head coaching experience. Redick's poker face drew notice at his own postgame news conference Thursday, while Barbarez pumped up Bosnian fans in all black business attire.

World Cup Day 8 context

Thursday's results came amid live updates from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Switzerland's win part of a Day 8 slate that also saw Canada in total control elsewhere in the tournament.

Separately, it remains unclear whether Christian Pulisic will play against Australia on Friday as the American star continues to deal with a leg injury.

Barbarez has Bosnia back on two feet and playing hard with house money, ahead of schedule and happy to be at the World Cup for the first time in 12 years. Wednesday against Qatar is the match his players must win to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
